The Athena Sophia Medical and Ethical Foundation supports the education and ethical formation of physicians and allied health professionals — joining scientific rigor with conscience, and clinical skill with compassion.
The Athena Sophia Medical and Ethical Foundation is organized and operated exclusively for charitable, educational, and scientific purposes within the meaning of Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code. Our mission is to promote ethical excellence, humanistic education, and international collaboration in medicine.
Our programs are designed to foster professionalism, cross-cultural understanding, and ethical leadership. Through education and service, we seek to strengthen the global practice of healthcare as both a science and a moral vocation.
The Foundation reflects our conviction that medicine, education, and ethics are most powerful when united by integrity and compassion.
The Foundation takes its name from Athena, the Greek goddess of wisdom, and from sophia, the Greek word for wisdom itself — and in personal tribute to a beloved companion named Athena, whose memory inspires our work. Together, the names express our hope: that medicine practiced with knowledge, humility, and kindness becomes wisdom in service of others.
These values, formally adopted by our Board of Directors, define how we work, teach, and serve. They are the moral and intellectual foundation of everything the Foundation supports.

The Foundation is governed by an independent Board of Directors whose members bring expertise in emergency medicine, medical education, and clinical research. Directors serve three-year renewable terms under bylaws adopted in November 2025.
Emergency physician and founder of the Foundation. Dr. Hall serves as the U.S. point of contact for the Foundation's Romanian Emergency Medicine Rotation.
Physician with expertise in clinical care and medical education. Dr. Robinson oversees the Foundation's financial stewardship and reporting.
Physician-scientist with training in clinical medicine and research. Dr. Chau oversees the Foundation's records, minutes, and governance filings.
The Board has formally adopted a complete set of governance policies consistent with New York law and IRS guidance for 501(c)(3) public charities:

The Foundation is committed to the responsible stewardship of charitable assets. No part of the Foundation's income inures to the benefit of private individuals; all funds are used solely for charitable and educational purposes consistent with our mission.
The Board retains authority over all grants and material expenditures. Quarterly financial summaries are reviewed by the Board, and the Foundation will file Form 990-series returns annually with the IRS.
Contributions to the Athena Sophia Medical and Ethical Foundation are deductible under IRC §170 to the extent allowed by law.
